- Gain knowledge of hand sewing tools and equipment and their specific uses
- Learn the basic hand-sewing stitches fundamental to costume mounting practice
- Apply these newly learned skills in a mock mounting practice session
- Tour the gallery’s current costume exhibition and costume store and learn how the curatorial team prepare for exhibitions
Hand-outs will be provided
By the end of the training, participants will have been taught the basic hand-sewing stitches used in the mounting of historic costume. They will have the opportunity to practice these skills in a mock mounting exercise where they will start to create padding for a mannequin. This will provide a good basic knowledge which will enable participants to progress to the SHARE costume mounting training and give confidence to move forward in creating high standard mounts for their own costume collections.
Participants should have no previous sewing experience at all, as this training has been created for complete beginners. Participants will need to bring a packed lunch. Tea, Coffee and biscuits will be provided by the museum.
