Event Details


A day for volunteer gardeners who care for the region’s museum gardens. An opportunity for the volunteers to meet other gardeners from around the region, enjoy a visit to Audley End and garden, and learn more about planning and growing the right plants for your period garden.


At Audley End you will be able to meet Louise  Ellis the Head Gardener, and Gemma Sturges, Senior Gardener (Kitchen Garden) You can enjoy the Capability Brown landscape, an 1830s Parterre, and Victorian Pond Garden and (Soil Association approved) Kitchen Garden.  We are delighted to be joined by Sarah and Jim Cook, ex Gardeners with the National Trust who will be discussing the theme of using the right plants for the period.


 We will also hear from Professor Tom Williamson of the Landscape History Department at UEA. He will speak on ‘Time in the Garden: issues in the restoration of historic parks and gardens’


 During the day there will also be an opportunity for a seed swap if any gardeners has extra seed they have collected beyond their own site’s needs and would be interested in exchanging it with others.


The morning session will be largely indoors, with limited walking between rooms. The garden tours will be approximately one hour of walking. 


 There are a maximum of 40 places on the day, so we need to restrict places to volunteer gardeners only please and a maximum of three people per venue initially on a first come first served basis.


Drinks will be provided but please bring your lunch.

By booking a place on to SHARE Museums East Training Programme, you are agreeing to the following terms and conditions:



  • That you are from an East of England museum or heritage organisation which is in the Arts Council England’s Accreditation Scheme. Where this is not applicable you acknowledge that so that we can aim to facilitate your attendance if we can. (This may involve a fee).

  • It is a condition of receiving this ACE funded training that the online evaluation sent to the email address provided at the point of booking is completed by the specified deadline. This deadline is in the email notification unless a paper evaluation is specifically requested and submitted on the day of the training session.

  • By booking a place you agree that you are booking as a representative of your organisation and should you cancel your booking without sufficient notice your organisation is responsible for paying the late cancellation fee of £50.
