This hands-on course led by the Collections Services team at the British Museum is aimed primarily at museum staff and volunteers who move or assist with moving large or heavy objects as part of their role.
There will be a tour of the WCEC (World Conservation and Exhibitions Centre) logistics hub, a presentation on the principles of safe handling, and a practical session using specialist lifting equipment. The day will end with a tour of selected galleries and discussion of the different ways of moving a range of objects.
By the end of the course, participants will:
- Understand the principles of safe heavy object movement in a museum environment
- Have had an introduction to a variety of lifting and moving techniques
- Have had practical experience of moving an object using a specific set of equipment
Please note: Candidates will need to be physically fit and able to participate in the practical session. Candidates will need to bring their own steel toe cap boots.
Refreshments will be provided, but please make your own arrangements for lunch. Participants are responsible for their own travel costs and arrangements. Places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment.
