This course will examine what oral history is, where it comes from, how it has developed, and some of the issues around its reliability and its place within historical practice generally.
Participants will then discuss how to make an oral history interview as effective as possible, and look at the principles behind producing archive-quality recordings. There will be a short demonstration of the use of solid state recording equipment.
Participants will also be asked to briefly interview each other, putting into practice all that has been learned so far, and the results will be discussed.
Finally, attention will be given to consent, copyright and various other legal and ethical issues, as well as elements of transcribing, summarising and archiving.
This course is being delivered as part of Save The 70s, an HLF-funded two-year project which will enable 11 museums and heritage organisations to work with the local community to explore the impact of the 1970s. Priority will therefore be given to the project’s partner museums, but SHARE Museums East are very pleased to be able to offer a limited number of places to the wider museum community.
This event is also running at the Museum of East Anglian Life on 29th January 2014.
