Things Maritime get everywhere. This ‘Martitime Heritage East’ event will comprise a series of speakers touching on many aspects of the maritime world. Learn a little more about things that may just come your way, be it a tool, a painting, a chart, something in the ethnographic collection or a photograph. Personnel from both maritime & non maritime museums will finish the day knowing a bit more.
11-11.30 Tools of the Rope & Canvas Trades:- Des Pawson, Museum O Knots & Sailor’s Ropework.
11.30-12 Navigation & Charts:-Richard Watkinson, Ipswich Maritime Trust.
12-12.30 Lifeboats through the years:- David Whittle, Harwich Society.
12.30-1pm Identification of items:- Bring either the item or a photo of an object that is a puzzle to you and just may have some maritime connection , and we would hope that the combined knowledge in the room may help you work out what it is.
1pm -1.30 Lunch
1.30-2pm A Look at some of the Maritime items in Ipswich’s Ethnographic collection:- Melanie Hollis, Colchester & Ipswich Museum Service.
2pm -2.30 Inuit clothing:- Robert Entwistle, Colchester & Ipswich Museum Service.
2.30-3pm Pierhead Paintings :- Robert Malster, Author of many East Anglian Maritime Books.
