Please note this is a part one of a two-part course. Please read the below information carefully.
This practical two-part course is aimed at museum staff or volunteers who have no experience using social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, but who want to set up and maintain an account for their museum.
Participants will be setting up Facebook and Twitter accounts as part of this session, and so should ideally be the main user of social media for their organisation.
This first session will include an introduction to social media and its uses in a museum context, focusing on the two most popular sites, Facebook and Twitter. Participants will be guided through the process of signing up and customising a Facebook page and Twitter account for their museum, and given advice on where to go from there. The trainers will also provide step-by-step instructions on how to use each site.
The second session (5th November) is a “troubleshooting” meeting, where participants will have the chance to ask questions or discuss problems, and also celebrate successes. This will be a half-day session.
By the end of the two sessions, participants will:
- Have a better understanding of social media and its uses in a museum context
- Have set up and customised a Facebook and Twitter account for their museum
- Know how to send a Tweet, update their Facebook status, and start attracting followers for their museum
- Have discussed their experiences with the trainers and with other new users of social media
Please note: Participants should be relatively competent computer users and must have access to an e-mail address on the day, as they will need to verify social media account details via e-mail. If other staff and volunteers will be using the Facebook and Twitter accounts, this should ideally be an e-mail address they also have access to.
It would also be helpful for participants to bring a memory stick or CD with images of their museum which will be used to customise their new Facebook page and Twitter profile, although these can be added at a later date.
Morning refreshments will be provided, but please make your own arrangements for lunch.
